Engaging the Communities Follow-Up
The Board discussed the feedback from the Engaging the Communities meetings that were held throughout the division. The main question that was asked of our communities was, “As Prairie Land Regional Division’s enrolment continues to decline and government funding is reduced, what can we do to keep your schools open and viable?” The main themes emerging from this community input seem to be the need to explore the benefits and limits of programming through video-conferencing, researching optimal grade combinations for small enrolment classes, limiting busing times, and reviewing school utilization for J.C. Charyk Hanna School and Hanna Primary schools. A committee has been formed to compile and analyze the information for the Board’s consideration and use as the Board deliberates on how best to move forward as a division in times of constraint.

Meeting with MLA
The Board Chair, Duane Roy, Division staff, and trustees met with our MLA, the Honourable Jack Hayden, to discuss educational funding, the School Act review and the responsibilities of Board’s for local decisions about education. MLA Hayden confirmed his ongoing commitment regarding the important role that school boards play in ensuring quality educational opportunities for local communities. He also agreed with Board Chair, Duane Roy, that the government’s recent clawback on PLRD’s reserves in the amount of $358 000.00 should be considered a loan and returned when the provincial revenue picture improves.

Homework Guidelines
The Board reviewed homework guidelines as presented by Dr. Neumeier. In response to the Board’s request that homework guidelines be in place to support students and parents, Dr. Neumeier met with all principals to compile general homework guidelines. The Guidelines are intended to aid teachers, students and their families in the use of homework as a supportive learning tool that helps students experience success, develop study skills, personal planning and organizational skills. When families and schools work together to support learning, student success is increased.
