Japan - Culture in Transition

Grade 7 Social Studies curriculum directs students to study the culture in Japan, as a culture which has undergone dramatic changes in the past 50 years, but has still remained greatly the same, despite the many changes.  This study examines the similarities and differences between Japan's present culture and its past culture, as well as comparing how Japanese culture is similar and different to our own, Canadian Culture.

There are two main components to this study:

Japanese Cultural Fair

Students explored three different web quests about Japan.  Working in pairs, the students chose ONE aspect of Japanese culture to investigate, following the instructions given in the web quest.  The conclusion of their research took the form of a Japanese Cultural Fair.  The pairs of students created visual displays, along with oral description about their project.

Invitations were sent out, and the Cultural Fair Displays were viewed by parents, siblings, fellow students and community members.

Japan - Canada ePALS

Students in Grades 7 and 8 are involved in exchanging email with students of similar age in Japan.  Through this information exchange, the students are learning first hand about Japanese culture, and how it has changed in recent years.
