Settlement Project

Life in Canada (1400- 1700) – Early Development and Colonization

Canada, in the years between 1400 and 1800, went through many changes.  The people who lived in Canada experienced many different challenges and problems.  For most people, basic day-to-day survival was high on their list of priorities.  But what did one do to survive the harsh environment in Canada?  Different groups of people found different ways to combat the elements and survive despite the varying climatic conditions.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. For this project, the class will be divided into five groups.  Each group will choose a particular settlement (in a given time period), in order to create a model of this settlement.

  1. Students may choose one of:

·     Acadian Village, 1650

·     Seigneury along the St. Lawrence River, 1780s

·     Quebec City habitation, 1608

·     Iroquois village, 1600s

·     Plains people’s village, late 1700s

·     North West Coast people’s village, 1700s

·     Trading Post, 1600s

·     Jesuit mission (i.e., Mission of Ste. Marie in Huronia), 1630s

·     Jamestown colony, c. 1607 (American colony)

  1. What did these people do to survive?  In the creation of the model, students should try to show as many aspects of daily life as possible – food, clothing, shelter, transportation, language?, treaties and relationships, etc.

  1. Models should be mounted firmly on a wooden base, no more than 60cm x 60 cm.

  1. Use real-life materials as much as possible (yes, beaver pelts may be hard to find), such as wood, twigs, grasses, mud (ew?), rocks, etc. to make your model realistic.
