A Timeline of Canadian History

Introduction:

The long history of Canada, from the arrival of the Europeans until the start of the 20th century, is filled with many events.  A timeline is an important resource for sorting out the order in which events occurred.  This assignment provides you with the chance to summarize the major events of this time period in an illustrated time line.

Instructions:

  1. For this assignment, you are to work in groups of 2 or 3.

  2. Create a timeline that summarizes the major events of Canadian history from the arrival of the Europeans (late 1400s) until the start of the 20th century (1905).

  3. Arrange the years in the time-line either horizontally or vertically, with a consistent scale (eg., 1cm = 2 years).

  4. At the appropriate locations along the time-line, list all the events given in this assignment.  Use your textbook and the websites provided (resources) to determine the correct dates for each event.

  5. Use your textbook and the resources provided to find illustrations for the key events chosen.

  6. Be sure to list all the websites you visited in a bibliography.

  7. Choose the 15 events which you feel are the MOST important, and provide brief summaries of these major events.

  8. Identify each event using colour-coding to indicate under which of the topics the event best fits.  Below is one possible set of topic classifications:

    q   Political Change and/or reform

    q   Conflict and Unrest

    q   Exploration and Discovery

    q   Changing Borders

You may choose to use the above classification system, add to it, or use an alternative set.  Before proceeding with the work on the time-line, make sure that your teacher has approved your coding system.

Your timeline must also include photographs, drawings, maps, or other appropriate illustrations to visually represent events that occurred.  Complete your finished work neatly and thoroughly.

This assignment will be due on Tuesday, March 16th, 2004.
