French-English Relations Timeline

 

Introduction:

Since 1759, when Britain conquered New France and took control of the French inhabitants who lived there, there has been tension between the French and English in Canada.  In this assignment, you will conduct research into the history and current state of the controversy between English and French Canada.

 

Instructions:

Working with a partner, complete Part I of the assignment (the timeline).  Working individually, complete Part II of the assignment (essay questions).

Part I:

Timeline of French-English Relations:  Create a table or timeline of French-English relations which includes the following events:

 

Confederation, 1867, and the creation of the Province of Quebec

Riel Rebellion, 1885

Manitoba Schools Question, 1890

Conscription in World War I and World War II

Quiet Revolution, 1960 – 1966

F.L.Q. Crises, October, 1970

Election of the Parti Quebecois, 1976

Referendum of 1980

Failure of Meech Lake Accord, 1987

Charlottetown Accord, 1992 (and national referendum)

Bloc Quebecois

 

For each event, provide

a brief description of what happened, and

how it affected French- English relations (was this event positive, bringing the two sides together; or negative, pushing the two sides further apart).

 

 

 

 

Part II:

Individually, answer TWO of the following short essay questions.  Each answer should be about one (handwritten) page long.

 

  1. Should Quebec receive special status or recognition in order to keep Quebec in Canada?

 

  1. If you were the Prime Minister of Canada, what solutions would you recommend to the issue of Quebec separatism?

 

  1. Does Quebec, in your opinion, have cause for complaint regarding its position in Canada?
