The Board believes that all web sites published in the Prairie Land Regional Division (PLRD) or PLRD schools impact the image of PLRD as a whole.  Therefore web site authors are expected to exemplify the highest standards of good taste and responsibility.  The intent of this document is to ensure that all Prairie Land School web sites meet minimum standards for maintenance, appropriate content, protection of privacy, respect for copyright, and safety of students and staff.  Maintaining web sites effectively prevents negative images of both the school and the school division from being projected and avoids the potential of putting students and/or staff at risk of invasion of privacy, harm, or litigation.  Therefore it is of the utmost importance that any PLRD web site be properly planned and maintained.

The purposes of the Prairie Land Regional School web sites are:

  •             To serve as a resource to benefit the students of the school

  •             To keep the parents and children in touch with school information

  •             To let the community at large know who our schools are and what they stand for

  •             To showcase and celebrate students’ work

This document is not intended to be a complete guide to web site development.  The Stakeholder Technology Advisory Council (STAC) under the auspices of Alberta Learning, published a best practice document in March of 1999 that is an excellent resource for use a guide to developing a web site.

Prairie Land Web Site Policy should be considered a companion document to the STAC best practice document.  The best practice document contains many helpful guidelines while the PLRD web site policy document specifies mandatory components, features, or restrictions on PLRD school and division web sites.

For a copy of Implementing and Managing Web Site Development in Education-Best Practices for Alberta School Jurisdictions refer to the planning tab at http://ednet.edc.gov.ab.ca/technology/.

This document is intended to be dynamic, and is open to revision.

Our thanks to Wolf Creek for allowing us to use their Website guidelines as a basis for our own.
